Effectiveness Of Factory-Treated Clothing
In the early 1940s, the armed forces used repellents that had to be applied every two hours - not very useful when you're in a life-or-death situation. The USDA worked for a decade before coming up with a solution that repels bugs for 10 hours.
The military immediately put the game into service and in 1957 it was released for commercial use. Today we know it as "DEET", a compound found in many insect repellents. Contrary to popular belief, DEET does not actually kill mosquitoes;
disrupts their neurons and receptors, so they don't detect human-scented chemicals like lactic acid and carbon dioxide. Permethrin has been registered since 1979. It was first registered in 1990 as a clothing repellent by the military.
Around the same time, we also approved permethrin as a spray for use on consumer clothing and equipment, as well as for commercial factory treatment of clothing and various types of equipment. In 2003, we registered for the first time consumer clothing products factory-treated with permethrin.

Safety Of Permethrin In Factory-Treated Clothing
Since then, more products have been approved. Future U.S. military uniforms could offer protection against disease-carrying mosquitoes by using insect repellent built into the fabric itself.
